Participant expectations

The following is an outline of what is expected of Chewstick Foundation Retreat Participants during the Chewstick Foundation Retreat Program.

If you are under 18, we will require your parent’s permission before accepting you as a participant for The Chewstick Foundation. Your parents are invited to call or e-mail the Executive Director at director@chewstick.org should they have any questions or concerns.

1. The Chewstick Foundation’s mission is to bring people together, in safe space, to create positive vibes in lives and community; using storytelling, creative expression and collaboration, we help people to grow a deeper understanding and appreciation of themselves, each other, and the world. We ask that participants keep this in mind throughout the duration of the Retreat.
2. Always observe and celebrate the four pillars of The Chewstick Foundation: respect, freedom, love, truth.
3. In keeping with Chewstick's four pillars, Retreat Participants will neither practice nor tolerate discrimination or harassment against any staff/committee member, volunteer or participant on the ground of race, creed, color, place of origin, ethnic origin, ancestry, citizenship, political or religious affiliation, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, family relationship, economic status, identity, disability or record of offenses.
4. Retreat Crew and participants will treat each other, staff and fellow participants with dignity, care and respect. We will be sensitive to and educate ourselves about individual and group differences. We will honor all participants' rights to self-determination and agree to support people in making their own personal choices.
5. We will foster an environment of respect and the premise that every story is worthy of being heard. Hence, during group activities, side conversations should not take place, so as to demonstrate that we value this experience.
6. Retreat Crew and participants must understand that being under the influence of alcohol or drugs interferes with our ability to fully benefit from the vibes. During the Retreat, participants should therefore conduct themselves in a responsible and conscientious manner with regard to this. Further, they should never provide alcohol, tobacco or other controlled substances to underage participants.
