Acoustic soul in Bermuda
Kristin Fung and Sheree Spencer, known as K Funk and Lady Ree, visited Bermuda together to perform and facilitate a ukulele workshop at Chewstick’s Winter Retreat. The duo was part of Toronto’s TTC Subway Musicians Program, combining singing and ukulele with a repertoire ranging from Al Green to Elvis Presley.

Music, learning and community
Both performers were professional musicians, performing artists, event producers and certified teachers with more than ten years of experience in entertainment, arts and culture. Their “Uke Can Sing” project combined community building with learning to sing and play the ukulele.
The project received support from Waterfront Toronto’s Artist Installation Program in 2016 and was selected for Toronto’s Arts in the Parks programme in 2017. The original announcement also noted attention from Tropicana Ltd, CBC TV News, Rogers TV and Radio-Canada.
A shared Retreat rhythm
The workshop took place as part of the 17–19 February 2017 Winter Retreat on Port’s Island. The announcement anticipated around 40 participants and described ten ukuleles borrowed from the community so attendees could learn together.
This was the Barbadian-Chinese Canadian duo’s first visit to Bermuda to teach and perform together.
